The engine speed lever is easy to use - there is no need to worry about pushing too far and engaging the choke as on single throttle/choke lever systems.
The choke lever is spring loaded so the operator cannot accidentally operate the tractor with the choke on.

Deep mower-deck stamping gives excellent cut quality. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck without getting recut:

Reducing the amount of re-cutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.
- Helps maintain excellent cut quality at faster mowing speeds
Clean flow of material out of the discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.
Even in mulching mode, cut evenness is improved compared to other designs because the additional depth allows for continuous circulation, optimal re-cutting, and an even distribution of clippings.

Deep mower-deck stamping gives high productivity, which gets the job done fast. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck quickly, reducing the amount of re-cutting so more power is available to process incoming grass:

MulchControl option

The MulchControl attachment for the 48A Mower Deck makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

There are few places to catch and hold material on top and underneath the deck.

The 48-in. (122-cm) Mower Deck is designed for maximum versatility, providing the greatest ease in changing from one mower discharge mode to another:

With the optional MulchControl attachment installed (along with the special mulching blades), changing from side-discharge to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple flip of a lever.
The Power Flow rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl attachment and blades installed - by simply placing the MulchControl lever in the side-discharge position.

Front roller option

Optional front rollers are available for the 48A Mower Deck to reduce the chance of scalping when mowing over berms and other uneven areas. Parts required are:

How MulchControl works

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
- The MulchControl baffle, or divider, between the left and middle spindles is about half way down. The height is designed to balance the mulching and side-discharge modes.
- When the MulchControl baffle is open, the divider between the left and middle spindles passes a portion of the material to the discharge opening, along with the material from the middle and right spindle areas.
- When the MulchControl baffle is closed, the material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.

The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
- The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
Changing from mulching to side discharge or vice versa takes only a few seconds.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

For operators who usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
For operators who usually side-discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
For operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
For operators who bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. Now the operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharge or bagging when needed.

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
When optimum bagging and lawn clean-up is desired

Standard cruise control

Easy-to-use cruise control option maintains the tractor's speed for mowing larger areas.

To engage, lift up on the cruise lever and hold it until foot is removed from the forward pedal.
To disengage, lightly press and then release the forward pedal.
For emergency stops, cruise can be released by pushing on the brake pedal or pushing down on the cruise control lever.

CAUTION: Children or bystanders may be injured by rotating blades. Before traveling forward or rearward:

Carefully check the area around the machine.
Disengage the mower before backing up.

NOTE: Backing up while the mower is engaged is strongly discouraged. RIO should be used only when operating another attachment or when the operator deems it necessary to reposition the machine with the mower engaged.

Stop forward travel.
Look behind the machine to be sure there are no bystanders.
Push and hold in the RIO switch while depressing the reverse pedal slightly.

NOTE: If the mower or other attachment stops while repositioning the machine, return the attachment engagement switch to the off position. Start engine and engage mower. Begin again with step 2.

Release the RIO switch and reposition the machine as the machine begins to move rearward.
Resume forward travel. The mower or other attachment should continue operating.
Repeat procedure to position the machine again.

Cruise control is standard equipment:

To engage, lift up on the cruise lever and hold until the foot is removed from the forward pedal.
For emergency stop, the cruise control can be released by pushing on the brake pedal or the forward pedal.

Look for the MowerPlus app on the iOS® or Android™ system app stores.

The app supports residential lawn equipment such as 100 Series, S240, X300, X500, X700, Z200 through Z600, and many similarly-sized older products. It does not presently support tractor models numbered 1000 and larger, such as 1025R.

7P Poly Utility Cart

Every owner of a John riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart. Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials including firewood, lawn debris, sand, dirt, mulch, garden tools, plants, and bushes.

Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment.

NOTE: For proper braking and operation, the loaded weight of the cart should never exceed the weight of the tractor, or other towing unit, plus the operator. The loaded weight of any equipment towed by an EZtrak™ or ZTrak™ mower should not exceed 250 lb (113.4 kg). See the appropriate vehicle pages for the weight of the vehicle and the mower deck.

7P Poly Utility Cart

The cart has a premium molded, high-density polyethylene box construction.
Compression molding process allows polyethylene to be the optimum thickness in all areas for superior strength and durability.
Polyethylene body will not rust or dent; it stays looking new longer.
0.75-in. (2-cm) x 2-in. (5-cm) stake pockets are molded in to make the addition of side extensions easy.
Two vertical 0.75-in. (2-cm) molded channels on each side allow easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
Ribs in the box bottom add strength and prevent the shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; there is no tailgate to loosen or remove.
Styling is compatible with other John Deere equipment.
Pneumatic tires provide turf tread for good flotation, shock absorption, and minimal rolling resistance.

A convenient foot pedal dump release kit, LP48017, which now comes standard on all 10P and 17P carts is available to retrofit existing poly carts. This kit allows the operator to use both hands to lift the cart bed for more natural and efficient unloading.

Every owner of a John Deere riding lawn and garden product is a potential customer for a high-quality, affordable utility cart. Utility carts can be used to haul a variety of materials, including firewood, lawn debris, dirt, sand, mulch, garden tools, plants, and bushes.

Utility carts are designed, painted, and decaled to be compatible with other John Deere equipment.

For proper braking and operation, the loaded weight of the cart should never exceed the weight of the tractor, or other towing unit, plus the operator. See the appropriate vehicle pages for the weight of the vehicle and the mower deck.

Welded box

Welded box construction provides maximum reliability:

16YS Swivel Cart

The 17-cu-ft (0.48-m³), 800-lb (363-kg) capacity or 350 lb (158 kg) when using swivel feature to dump 16YS Swivel Cart is unique in the lineup of John Deere carts in that it can be swiveled 120 degrees to either side for easier unloading. The operator can simply pull up next to where they want to dump the material and swivel the cart, eliminating the need to back up the cart.

Key features include:

Haul a variety of materials including lawn debris, sand, dirt, mulch, and plants
800-lb (363-kg) capacity makes it durable enough for the heavy jobs
- 350 lb (158 kg) when using swivel feature to dump
Convenient foot pedal release for easy dumping
Molded stake pockets for enlarging the bed size

NOTE: Do not exceed 350 lb (158 kg) weight capacity when using swivel feature to dump.

1,000-lb (454-kg), 17-cu ft (0.48-m³) load capacity.
Cart has premium molded polypropylene box construction.
Polypropylene body will not rust or dent, staying new-looking longer.
0.75- x 2-in. (19- x 51-mm) stake pockets are molded in to make addition of side extensions easy.
Two vertical 0.75-in. (19-mm) molded channels on each side allow for easy use of dividers to separate the box into two or three compartments.
Ribs in box bottom add strength and prevent a shovel from hitting bolts when emptying the cart.
Sloped tailgate design makes emptying the box easier; no tailgate to loosen or remove.

Add fuel stabilizer every time fuel is purchased.
Deere gasoline-powered equipment is recommended to run on a minimum of 87 octane gasoline.
John Deere Fuel-Protect for gasoline is safe to use in all types of gasoline, including gasoline/oil mixtures and blended fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol.
Use plastic fuel containers to store fuel; ask a local John Deere dealer.
For best results, use a spill-proof gas can that automatically seals the gas can vent.
Store fuel in a cool, dry, dark place in a sealed fuel can.
Fill tank to the top every time the machine is put away.
- Make sure tank is drained if stored for the winter or treated if left for prolonged periods of time.

How MulchControl works

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
- The MulchControl baffle, or divider, between the left and middle spindles is about half way down. The height is designed to balance the mulching and side-discharge modes.
- When the MulchControl baffle is open, the divider between the left and middle spindles passes a portion of the material to the discharge opening, along with the material from the middle and right spindle areas.
- When the MulchControl baffle is closed, this material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.

MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
When optimum bagging and lawn clean-up is desired

MulchControl baffle closed

The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
- The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
Changing from mulching to side discharging or vice versa takes only a few seconds.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

Usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
Usually side-discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
Always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
Bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags
- With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower will run without material when the baffle is closed.

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharge or bagging when needed.

I owned a Deere LT190 for 15 yrs. i put about 340 hrs on it with its Kawasaki and decided it was time to buy a new Deere, I bought the S240 with the 48 inch deck and 18.5 Kawasaki for my 2 acres here in Florida. The machine cuts fine . I see a few improvements over the comparable LT190's deck - beefier. My only gripe is I have already broken one deck belt at less than 35hrs. The belts are NOT cheap ! The parking knob also fell off ? The machine for whatever reason seems a tad slower too compared to my old LT190 ?????? Anyway we will see if it lasts as long as my 190 did . I had to put on about 2 sets of spindles on my Lt190 in its lifetime ...I hope these S240 deck spindles last - only time will tell.

I have had my S240 for 2 months now. I really like it. My old rider was given to me from a neighbor. A 1996 red one. What a difference with this new John Deere S240!!! PROS: Quality built - once you sit your honey down you can just feel how well it is put together. SPEED - compared to I had this thing is a Ferrari! ZOOM!!! TURNING RADIUS: Pretty dang sharp! A lot better than I was use to. ERGONOMICS: SIMPLE! You don't need a PHD to figure out how to run this machine. :) MAINTENANCE: Simple schedule to follow. Yes, you can do it yourself. There are a ton of YouTube videos that show step by step. STORAGE: Has a nice compartment and a CUP HOLDER!!!!! Now I have a place to put my.......soda. Ahem. ACCESSORIES: A bunch! I have the deluxe mulching kit installed - love it! Have the bagger which I'll use in the fall. The 7P dump cart - ROCKS! The JD grease gun is nice as well. I also took the extended warranty - for the price you just cant beat the coverage! CONS / THINGS TO KNOW: SPEED & SUSPENSION - If you are like me and your current (old) rider is well broken in you will notice quite a difference. You sit higher, the feel is firmer because the machine is so well put together and I recommend easing into your usage so you dont throw yourself off....lol REVERSE ENGAGE BUTTON: Well, it's for safety so...... In reality it's not THAT inconvenient but it takes getting used to. PARKING BRAKE: In order to have your machine run while not seated the parking brake must be engaged. Another thing you get used to but..... Ugh. TIRE WIDTH VS TURN RADIUS: I wish the tires, from outer of left to right was an inch or two narrower. The turning radius is much sharper than you can cut. What I mean is I now around a tree and firepit, both with curving around and I cant hug it 360° like my old one. I've gotten use to it. Then again, the wider the wheelbase the better the ride. So it's a lil give and take. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MODEL!

Could not have picked a better mower. Im a large man 6'5" 295lbs. This mower is very sturdy and comfortable. I mow an acre yard weekly. I have had mower for three years and she still runs like the day we had her delivered. I would recommend foregoing the home improvement store mowers and upgrade to this mower. It is obviously more money but in my opinion well worth it. This mower is much sturdy and built with thicker stronger material.

Found this tractor has most of the important 300 series features such as same engine, seat, better transaxle than 100 series without the added cost. It doesn't have an electronic dash, the heavier 300 series frame nor the foot-pedal to assist deck lift. (This deck raises/lowers easily with handle on fender).The S240 makes quick work for my 2 acres with the optional 48" deck. A super value to me.

Overall I am very satisfied with this mower. The construction is very high quality. My previous Big box store mower had a cheap spot welded front axle which bent from going down hills with the need to turn at the same time and did not have bearings for the front wheels. It had bushings which wear out. The steering and turning radius on this mower is great. I also love the engine and the mowers ability to handle small hills. My previous mower had the same horsepower but could not handle my yard like this one. My only complaint is that the accelerator pedal takes quite a bit of effort while riding it but I have not yet tried the cruise.

This John Deere replaces an 18 year old one (LT133). It cuts the grass better and the steering is very easy. Comfortable riding, but I would like to see larger front tires as what comes on it seems small when mowing in less than perfect ground. Gas tank could hold more as it will not mow all of my lawn on one tank. Overall satisfied with my purchase.

This model is replacing a previous purchased JD Lawnmower from 17 years ago. From the previous mower, the features that I was glad to see was the the seat adjustment and how the raising of the mower deck. Enjoyed the steering of this model from the previous model. Having a fuel gauge makes it easier about refueling and preparing it for storage in the fall. From the first JD lawn mower to the lawn mower I purchased, I went ahead and got the extra features that came on this mower then the basic model available. Looking to get another 15 to 20 years of service from this mower.
